Poll: Just for Fun… Are you a saver or throw-awayer?

Just out of curiosity, I thought it would be fun to see how many people are more savers and how many tend to throw away or get rid of stuff. Please do share with others!

I have to say if I hadn’t moved back and forth between Des Moines, WA and Bellingham for three years, then the moving around right after college I might be more of a pack rat, I have the tendancy to save stuff but after a while I get tired of dragging it around. Now that I live in my own house I guess I could just let it all hang out (keep it all) but I am so set in my ways now.

  2. I can’t believe you asked this TODAY. We finally had weather worthy of opening the garage door. (Live in South Dakota, first day we could open the door!). As the light shone in, and after I relished the fresh air in the garage…I looked around and thought….where did all this CRAP come from?? I have been moving stuff REPEATEDLY in boxes that I have NEVER opened?? What the heck?? I guess it’s time to realize…”I can’t take it with me…might as well get rid of it.” Good topic for today. I will let you know what I find. Could be a treasure…could be a criminal hiding in there. I would never know either way. LOL

  3. ROTFLMAO, Carol Ann! So funny! Let’s hope you don’t find any criminals, lol.

I definitely agree! After so many years I’m like where did all this STUFF come from? I’ve got to get rid of it!

I get anxious when deciding what to keep and what to throw out (professionally) for fear that I’ll be asked about that very thing I’ve thrown out sometime in the future. And it’s REALLY a struggle with what to keep electronically (email, flash drive, etc.)!!!

  6. I think I’m a bit of both. I certainly have things that I love and cherish and would not throw away that other people might see as junk but I also clean out my cupboards and wardrobe at least twice a year and I throw out or give away anything I haven’t used for a long time or cloths that I’m sick of or no longer fit.
When ever I move house I throw away a lot of stuff because I hate packing and unpacking.

I used to be a packrat…now I am trying to get rid of as much as I can, and live more simply.

  8. Stephanie says:

I throw away stuff constantly – I’ve always been like that when I wake up in my “major cleaning” moods watch out cause if it’s laying around and doesn’t have a designated “home” it’s going in the garbage! LOL

Since I took a records retention class several years ago, I have been very diligent to keep correspondence and documents only as long as I may have to use them. Also, I keep those documents that may be legally required, e.g., tax records, financial statements, contracts and the like. Elsewise I try to clean out as I go. People have gotten into serious legal trouble when they kept every scrap of paper, including restaurant napkins with notes. Having your own records retention policy both prompts and allows you to keep it tidy.

  10. Beverly Henry says:

I tend to be a bit of both. My saving grace however, is that I clean out at least 3 times each year. I save all the legal stuff and things that I label as “IMPORTANT”.

  11. This poll was so interesting. Looks like the thrower-awayers outnumber the pack-rats right now. It’s also always fascinating and surprising to see what people respond to and what resonates with them. Fun!

I’ve always definitely been a thrower-awayer/give-awayer. I can’t stand to accumulate too much junk or clutter. When I buy new things, I tend to get rid of something old. Not always, but most of the time. In fact, some of the time, I wish I did have a little bit of pack-rat in me. So many clothes I’ve had that would be so in style right now, lol.

I grew up with a mom who keeps everything from old newspaper to broken electrical appliances. I hate this side of her so much that it made me a throw-awayer without me realizing it. I’m the kind of person who if I buy something and the cashier says “Here’s a free mug for your purchase”, I’ll say something like “You can keep it.” When a close relative passed away a few years ago and I had to stay at home to take care of the pets while the others went to the funeral, I spent the time mourning and the next thing I knew, I was taking out all my mom’s crap from the refrigerator and throwing anything that I deemed as trash. Expired food and stuff like that. Throwing things away gives me comfort. It soothes me to no end. When in doubt a certain thing would come in handy soon, my mom would keep it. Me, I would throw it away and say “If I need it, I’ll get a new one.” I’m a chronic throw-awayer and I’m glad that this is the way I am.
